Eredivisie Dames

  • Amsterdam AMVJ Geschiedenis van A.M.V.J. - Basketball A.M.V.J., zoals onze vereniging kortweg genoemd wordt staat voor Algemene Maatschappij Voor Jongeren en is de Nederlandse tak van de internationale Young Mens' s Christian Association beter bekend als de Y.M.C.A. Toen AMVJ in 1928 de beschikking kreeg over het gebouw aan het Leidsebosje, nodigde de heer H. Rooswinkel een Engelsman Lew Lake, lid van de London Central YMCA, uit om in het AMVJ gebouw Basketbal bij haar leden te introduceren. Basketbal sloeg aan en ontwikkelde zich binnen AMVJ. Naast de sport- en culturele activiteiten die de omni-vereniging AMVJ toen al kende, werd in 1930 de AMVJ-Basketbal afdeling opgericht. Onder leiding van Dick Schmüll, toen nog student lichamelijke opvoeding en later leraar, werd hard getraind. De eerste wedstrijden die werden gespeeld waren meteen op internationaal niveau tegen YMCA-teams uit Londen en Brussel. Intussen ontving AMVJ in haar zaal diverse korfbalverenigingen om deze met de Basketbal sport kennis te laten maken. Zo kon het gebeuren dat vanuit korfbalverenigingen als D.T.V., Rohda en D.E.D. basketbal clubs werden opgericht. In 1938 waren er voldoende teams binnen Amsterdam om een competitie te starten. De Amsterdamse Basketbal Bond (ABB) werd opgericht. Diverse Amsterdamse teams en in het bijzonder de AMVJ teams speelden demonstratie wedstrijden in verscheidene steden in Nederland en zo verspreidde het basketbal zich langzaam over het gehele land. AMVJ is dus met recht de bakermat van het basketballend Nederland. Tot ver in de jaren zestig bestond de hoogste competitie in Nederland voornamelijk uit Amsterdamse teams. AMVJ deed driftig mee bij het inzamelen van landstitels. De heren waren kampioen in 1949, 1951, 1955 en de dames namen daarna de vlag over door in 1961, 1965, 1967, 1968 en 1970 landskampioen te worden.

  • Earl "The Goat" Manigault Earl Manigault was born in Charleston, South Carolina and raised in Harlem, New York. He grew up playing basketball and practiced constantly. He attached weights to his ankles in order to make himself stronger and so he could jump higher. Earl's eagerness in the end of his life to help people overcome the same struggles he did was tremendous. The nickname 'Goat' has several proposed origins. One theory states that by the time Manigault was in high school, he was known as 'The Goat' because of his quiet demeanor. Another states that the nickname started by confusion over Manigault's last name; people thought Manigault referred to himself as Earl Nanny Goat, so he became 'The Goat'. Goat also is an acronym for Greatest Of All Time.
